SEO - Mobile Indexation Update from Google

At the end of March 2018 Google officially posted information about the last stage of implementation for Mobile-First Indexation.

The final rolling of the scheme has started, and after 18 months of tests and different messages that we received from the big G, we can finally say that Google indexation for search result pages is going to give priorities to mobile websites. In essence, Google desktop index is not going to be a leading index anymore, and your general position on Google will be dependant on factors that are valid for mobile search results. Not only relevancy of your mobile site will matter but also how efficient is your website when used on mobile devices (speed of page as a search signal factor on the mobile index).

Mobile First Optimisataion Algorithm on Google

What does it mean for your business/website?

Not much unless:

a) you didn't touch your web project for the last couple of years;

b) you are serving different content to desktop users and to mobile users (with an assumption mobile content is a cut down version of your main desktop content).

If you developed your project before 2014, there is a chance your website is not fully optimised for mobile. The changes in mobile requirements changed over the years as devices did so even if your website was considered mobile friendly in 2012 there is a chance that it requires some work at this moment.

In general, Absowebly uses technology that does not make a distinctive difference between the indexable content of your desktop website and your mobile website. On custom projects, we are serving separate HTML to address mobile screens, but this is to make your customer experience better not to produce a cut down version of your content from the Google indexation point of view.

It is worth to note that Google still reserves rights to serve content that is not mobile friendly on mobile devices:

As always, ranking uses many factors. We may show content to users that’s not mobile-friendly or that is slow loading if our many other signals determine it is the most relevant content to show.

The element that is in our interest is the rolling of the update related to the page speed and the one that we are going to monitor carefully over the coming months.
